How We Research

Updated on

Every guide here starts with one question: will this rice cooker suit the person shopping for it? That means the rice you cook most, how many people you feed and how much counter space you have.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with your kitchen

A cooker for one person and a cooker for a family of six are different machines. So are a cooker for jasmine rice and one for brown rice and oats.

We check capacity in uncooked cups, the footprint and the menu settings. When your needs narrow the choice, we say what to look for.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at the heating type (basic, micom, induction or pressure), the inner pot and its coating, the menu settings, the timer and the keep-warm options. We also note what comes in the box, like a steam tray or a rice paddle.

Tiger, Zojirushi, Cuckoo and Toshiba describe their cookers in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what owners report after months of use. We look for patterns, like peeling coatings, rice sticking to the bottom, loud steam vents or hard-to-clean lids.

One unhappy owner doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A cooker that's great for a big family may score lower in a guide for two people.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages current

Makers sell close model numbers in different sizes and colors, so we check each model number and capacity before we link it. We only link new units, never renewed or used ones.

We skip unknown brands with no track record and any cooker with a known recall. When we change a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every cooker we cover.

Rice cookers vent hot steam, and pressure models hold steam under pressure. Follow the maker's manual for filling, venting and cleaning, and keep the cooker away from the counter edge.
